Wylfa

20.8 Site area (Hectares)
232 Station lifetime output of electricity (TWh)

Current phase: Defuelling

Wylfa is located on the north coast of Anglesey between Amlwch and Holyhead. Commissioned in 1971, it was the last and biggest of the Magnox stations to be built. After nearly 45 years of successful and safe operations, on 30 December 2015, Wylfa Nuclear Power Station closed down, marking the conclusion of Magnox reactor generation in the UK. During its generating life, Wylfa produced 232 terawatt-hours of electricity. The site is now in the defuelling phase, following which work will then be undertaken to take the site into Care and Maintenance. Wylfa is also responsible for the 30MW Maentwrog hydroelectric station near Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Key near term activities

The key near term goal for Wylfa is to complete defuelling and ship spent fuel to Sellafield in line with the MOP. The site also manages Maentwrog hydro-electric station which is situated near Trawsfynydd.

Achievements

After nearly 45 years of successful and safe operations, on 30 December 2015 Wylfa nuclear Power Station closed down marking the conclusion of Magnox reactor generation in the UK.

Although it was originally intended that Wylfa would shut-down in 2010, Wylfa’s life was eventually extended by an additional five years through innovative refuelling methods. The manufacture of Magnox fuel ceased in 2008 and the innovative Inter-Reactor Fuel Transfer or IRX process involved moving partly used fuel from one reactor to the other. This process was used at both Wylfa and Oldbury stations to extend power generation without making any new fuel.

Suppliers

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are a key link in our supply chain and Magnox is committed to supporting the SME agenda for growth.

Opportunities for contracts and ways to become a supplier are set out in the main Suppliers pages of this website.

Community

Site Stakeholder Groups (SSG) are long-established at each of the Magnox sites and provide an opportunity for stakeholders to find out more about the work being undertaken there.

Independently-chaired, the SSG meets regularly to examine our work, as well as that of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and regulators. The SSG’s membership includes local councillors, non-governmental organisations and other interested stakeholders.
