Hunterston A

36 Site area (Hectares)
73 Station lifetime output of electricity (TWh)

Current phase: C&M Preparations

Hunterston A is located on a promontory of the Ayrshire coast 30 miles south west of Glasgow. The twin reactor site was Scotland’s first civil nuclear generating station and, at the time of opening in 1969 was the largest in operation anywhere in the world. It ceased operations in 1989 after generating a total of 73 TWh.

Key near term activities

During the next two to three years, the site will focus on the retrieval and encapsulation of ILW together with the draining and stabilisation of the cartridge (spent fuel) cooling pond.

Towards the latter half of the that period there will be a significant increase in reactor deplanting works together with preparation work for the reactor safestore configuration.

Significant progress has been made in managing a number of contaminated land issues at the site.

Deplanting of a 400 tonne charge machine together with a programme of decontamination has allowed significant quantities of metal to be free released for recycling. Significant progress has been made on cleaning and stabilising the walls of the redundant fuel storage ponds.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are a key link in our supply chain and Magnox is committed to supporting the SME agenda for growth.

Opportunities for contracts and ways to become a supplier are set out in the main Suppliers pages of this website.

Site Stakeholder Groups (SSG) are long-established at each of the Magnox sites and provide an opportunity for stakeholders to find out more about the work being undertaken there.

Independently-chaired, the SSG meets regularly to examine our work, as well as that of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and regulators. The SSG’s membership includes local councillors, non-governmental organisations and other interested stakeholders.
