Sizewell A, located on the Suffolk heritage coast, ended 40 years of safe, compliant electrical generation on 31 December 2006.
During the station’s operational lifetime, its twin Magnox reactors produced more than 110 TWh of electricity. That is enough electricity to meet the electrical demand of England and Wales for six months. A typical day’s generation saw the station supply more than 10 million kWh - enough electricity to power a third of East Anglia.
The site's priority is now the defuelling of its nuclear reactors - currently scheduled to be completed in September 2014. Once defuelling has been completed, more than 99% of the radiological hazard will have been removed from site. Enabling projects are under way in parallel, as the site prepares for decommissioning.
Immediately to the north of Sizewell A is Britain’s newest nuclear power station Sizewell B, which is operated by EDF Energy.
